Clearfork Academy, a rehab center for adolescents struggling with addiction, has released a guide on insurance and how it can reduce the costs of treatment in Texas.
-- Acknowledging that costs may bar families from seeking help for teens who need treatment for addiction and mental health issues, Clearfork Academy has released a guide on the role insurance plays in treatment and how it can reduce out-of-pocket costs for parents. The guide explores what insurance typically covers, what families may still need to pay, and what options parents have if they aren’t on an insurance plan.

The cost of rehab varies depending on treatment intensity and addiction complexity. According to Clearfork Academy, outpatient care is the most cost-effective option, as patients live at home and only attend sessions at the facility when scheduled. Conversely, residential treatment includes housing, meals, and 24-hour care and supervision, with a typical 30-day program costing up to $30,000 or more.
Clearfork Academy adds that teen rehab may be more expensive than adult rehab, as adolescents often require additional support for co-occurring mental health conditions and age-specific issues that programs for adults do not address. As such, some parents may want to consider insurance to help cover out-of-pocket costs.
Per the resource, most major insurance plans will cover drug and alcohol rehab if it is deemed medically necessary. Coverage usually includes outpatient therapy, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization programs, and residential treatment; it may also extend to medical detox, withdrawal support, medication management, and family therapy.
How much families actually pay is dependent on the plan, how many deductibles are left, and whether they have copays. While the Affordable Care Act requires individual and small-group plans to cover essential health benefits, Clearfork Academy notes that in-network care cannot exceed $10,600 for one patient or $21,200 for a family for 2026 ACA Marketplace plans. Parents will also always have to pay out of pocket for services not provided as part of their insurance network.
In the absence of insurance, Clearfork Academy’s guide says that the state of Texas still offers resources to families who may struggle to meet treatment costs. Some institutions provide sliding-scale fees, Medicaid or CHIP eligibility programs, healthcare financing, and state-funded treatment. SAMHSA can also connect families to local behavioral health programs and nonprofit support groups through FindTreatment.gov, allowing parents to search for options they can afford.
