A new report by ContrastConnect covers the impact of the radiologist shortage on the healthcare industry and proposes remote contrast supervision as one solution to reduce the strain.
-- ContrastConnect has released a new industry report on the radiologist shortage and how it has impacted medical facilities and imaging practices around the country. With the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) projecting a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036, ContrastConnect and other experts believe that current hiring methods are no longer adequate to keep pace with the growing demand for imaging services, necessitating the adoption of virtual contrast supervision and other remote healthcare models.
One of the primary factors constraining the healthcare workforce, as detailed in ContrastConnect’s report, is residency programs: after medical school, radiologists complete a preliminary clinical year and a four-year residency, and subspecialists add a one- to two-year fellowship. This lengthy process is exacerbated by the limited number of vacancies for residency positions, causing recruitment to lag behind growing imaging demand and workforce attrition.
Predominantly rural regions, areas with lower median physician compensation, and healthcare systems that have historically struggled to retain specialty physicians are disproportionately impacted by the radiologist shortage, says ContrastConnect CEO Dor Shoshan. However, the company believes this pressure can be alleviated with the CMS’ recent regulatory changes, which took effect in January 2026: virtual supervision for level 2 diagnostic imaging procedures is now permanently permitted, eliminating on-site staffing requirements that may have otherwise constrained the number of procedures that can be completed in a day.
The new amendments allow imaging facilities to perform contrast-enhanced CT scans, MRIs, and other high-risk exams even without a radiologist on-site. Qualified physicians can instead satisfy the CMS’ “immediately available” requirements remotely, provided HIPAA-compliant, real-time audiovisual telecommunications technology is used. ContrastConnect’s report also notes that this model has the potential to reduce administrative costs while increasing a facility’s capacity to perform imaging procedures.
Before implementing virtual supervision, ContrastConnect says that administrators must assess their facility’s staffing model, technical baseline, and compliance posture for audio/video platforms. They must also evaluate virtual supervision platforms carefully to ensure they choose the correct provider for their facility.
